Doug Banister, the author, is now leading a word/power/sacramental church in Knoxville. This came after he wrote w/pc in the context of an Evan. Free Church. Very interesting...

Here is the link: http://www.allsoulsknoxville.com/

Word/Power Church really describes the kind of church environment that I am creating. I appreciate your encouragement. I have struggled to "put the cookies on the bottom shelf" so that the people in my church can see where I am coming from and where I want us to go.

Good analogy too. Sometimes you have to think like a junior higher to understand some of the truths of the Christian life.

DerekDerek Vreelandhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06278564226756132082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23758043.post-48130974634781700892008-02-28T00:58:00.000-05:002008-02-28T00:58:00.000-05:00GREAT POST!!!I call it "passionate depth". I used...GREAT POST!!!

I call it "passionate depth".

I used to live about an hour or so from WOLC. I was on staff at another church at the time -- so my wife and I would drive up on Friday evenings to their services. One such hot summer nite -- we stopped at the McDonalds on the way home to eat an icecream cone. I got down to the cone -- tore off the little paper holder at the base and ate away. The cone tasted terrible -- (I told my wife I thought it tasted like paper.) I turned on the overhead lights in the car -- only to find that my cone had had two paper holders put on it by mistake -- I was indeed eating paper!

My point is this: (perhaps a bit juvenile -- I know) The Word without the Holy Spirit is like eating a cone (paper base and all) without actually eating any icecream. The Holy Spirit without the Word is like a handful of icecream (on a sweltering hot day -- in the South) and having no cone (or cup) -- it can get quite messy.

Take away the Word (the Sword) and you render the Spirit ineffective in your life.

Take away the Spirit and you render the (inspired/ God-breathed) Bible ... dead/ lifeless altogether.

For so long -- I felt I was forced to choose one or the other -- NOT SO!

Once again -- GREAT POST!!!

p.s. the book on the Word/ Power Church looks intriguing -- I may have to check that one out.OPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16892682137266936445noreply@blogger.com
